This one-of-a-kind pair of Eastlake-style chairs has been lovingly restored from the frame up, blending historic craftsmanship with bold modern artistry. Originally upholstered in worn golden velvet and sagging with age, each chair has been completely rebuilt—marking a major milestone in my upholstery journey.

Begun in May 2024 and completed July 3, 2025, this project marks my first full seat rebuild: installing webbing, sewing and tying springs by hand, shaping new cushions, and honoring old bones with new life. The seats are now wrapped in deep navy velvet—a luxurious gift from my friend @TK_Creates while the backrests feature the popular Speedbird African wax print.

Known as Sika Wo Ntaban in Ghana, it translates to “money has wings,” a proverb that reminds us of how easily wealth can slip away if not respected. Across West Africa, the pattern carries layered meanings: from asking for favor or a young woman’s hand, to honoring movement, protection, and flight. It’s even known as Air Afrique in Togo and Eneke in Nigeria, where it symbolizes adapting with grace and resilience.

While restoring the ornate wood frames, one of the carved finials was damaged beyond repair. Rather than remove the feature, I recreated it using Amazing Putty to mold the original and DAS wood clay to sculpt its twin by hand. This subtle detail honors the chair’s original artistry and my own commitment to sustainable, skillful restoration.

The wood is solid hardwood (species unknown), original to the chairs, cleaned and polished to reveal its age and warmth. Whether placed in a creative studio, reading nook, or collector’s corner, this duo brings history, culture, and craft together in perfect conversation.
